what a life i lead in the summer
what a life i lead in the spring
what a life i lead in the winded breeze
what a life i lead in the spring

what a life i lead when the sun breaks free
as a giant torn from the clouds
what a life indeed when that ancient seed
is a berry watered and plowed

what a life
what a life
what a life
what a life

what a life i lead in the summer
what a life i lead in the spring
what a life i lead in the winded breeze
what a life i lead in the spring

I want out of the labels. I don’t want my whole life crammed into a single word. A story. I want to find something else, unknowable, some place to be that’s not on the map. A real adventure. A sphinx. A mystery. A blank. Unknown. Undefined.

i saw a preview for this new movie coming out about a family that wins the lottery and since then i’ve been thinking what I would do if i won the lottery…

i would travel the world with my husband and my son, for one year… without a home base

then…

i would buy a house in big sur, california. so, i went house shopping… online 🙂

Extraordinary 2600 sf. ft. mid-century modern redwood home on 2 forested acres with private cove located on legendary Spindrift Drive just south of the natural treasure known as Point Lobos State Reserve in Carmel’s coastal highlands. Minutes from Carmel going north, or the gateway to Big Sur heading south, this property is undoubtably an entire world unto it’s own with stairways leading to a private beach and seashore of unparalelled beauty. A beautifully landscaped winding driveway leads to a two car garage with a private home entrance. This type of property rarely surfaces for a sale.  2 bedroom / 2 bath

$5,450,000

Inside the gate of Big Sur’s exclusive Coastlands amidst views of the Pacific Ocean and Big Sur’s south coast rising from it, sits this gorgeous private compound featuring two homes of glass, wood, stone, and love. Beautiful woodwork, a stone fireplace, the sunken cobalt bath, redwood swimming pool, cedar sauna, art/dance studio, modern appliances, and central heating all make it very difficult to want to leave the main house…except, perhaps, to stroll through the charming gardens and across the enchanting forest bridge to the other completely secluded guesthouse nestled into the trees. Enjoying undoubtably the most convenient location in all of Big Sur, the property is right next door to The Post Ranch Inn. Ventana Inn and Spa, Big Sur Bakery, Nepenthe, Deejten’s, The Henry Miller Library, the Big Sur Fire Brigade, the Big Sur Health Center, and the local market are all just moments away. What makes this unique property so soulful and rare is that while Big Sur culture, services, and conveniences are so accessible, this home exudes the peace and solitude of a temple within it’s own private nature sanctuary overlooking what is widely considered to be the most spectacular meeting of land and sea on Earth.

Approximately 2000 sq. ft. on 2 acres, 3 BR, 3 Bath.   MLS# 80846836

$2,245,000

then…

i would put enough money away to pay for my son to go to college, at a private university just in case he decides to go to a private instead of a public school

then…

i would buy my mother a villa in italy with a view of lake como. its her favorite place in the world, her “happy place”… so, i found her the perfect place:

the house

the view

the kitchen

the bathroom

the bedroom

then…

i would pay off my best friend’s student loan debt. so she would finally be free to follow her passion and live a life without debt or worry

then…

i would send my family (dad, stepmom, little brother, aunt sandra, and uncle skipper) on a trip of their choosing for 1-6 months

then…

i would give a good portion of the remaining money to my favorite charities: stepwise, 1%, and the humane society

then…

i would spend the remaining money on gold coins

what would YOU do if YOU won the lottery?

the hubby and i are in talks about taking a real, honest to goodness vacation.

being that he is a workaholic and is daily pulled in every direction, because we own our own business, AND the fact that he doesnt like to travel unless he can make money by doing so, AND the fact that any vacation we’ve taken since 2007 has involved seeing music (except that one time we went to the beach and just relaxed); we have decided that we NEED to take a real vacation, one that will allow our brains to get some much needed fresh air.

we are thinking winter time… january or february. mainly because colorado will be a winter tundra at that point and “getting away” to somewhere tropical would be a heavenly escape. (and the winter is our slow time)

but where to go– that is the question.

here’s some adventures we are thinking about:

costa rica

baja (via a cruise -or- direct flight)

hawaii (we both have friends who live there)

alaska (via a cruise) yes, we know it will be chilly there but the sights would be amazing

where do YOU think we should go?

where would YOU like to go on an adventure?

1% for the Planet exists to build and support an alliance of businesses financially committed to creating a healthy planet.

Not long ago, a mountain climber and a fisherman realized they had a lot more in common than a disdain for wearing a suit to work. Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, owner of Blue Ribbon Flies, were also passionate environmentalists that happened to be running successful businesses. More important, they understood it was good business to protect the natural resources that kept them in business. And the rest is history…

i purchased my very first pair of chacos in the summer of 2002. they were black and very well loved. then, my friend’s puppy decided they were a chew toy and… destroyed them. he then replaced them with a pair of same the chaco style, but this time with orange straps. those chacos and i had some adventures… we went to las vegas together. i was even wearing them when i met michael jackson in caesars palace at 6 in the morning. we traveled to la together, then drove up hwy 1. we stopped and camped in big sur together. i was wearing them the very first time i dipped my toes into the pacific ocean and i’ve had a love affair with the pacific ever since. i wore them through the chilly streets of san fran. i wore them while brushing my teeth in a field during my first cross country drive. i wore them when i moved away from nashville headed for charleston. i danced in them at countless shows. i wore them when many nights turned to mornings. i wore them while enjoying countless glasses of mimosas with friends. then, one day they were gone. i replaced them with another pair, this time with no back strap. i wore these while traveling to countless pgroove shows, but then i lost one… then the other. i waited awhile before replacing them, with hope in my heart that they somehow would return to me. then, finally i broke down and purchased a used pair of the classic style from ebay. i wore them when i returned to the west coast traveling the coast of oregon and washington. i wore them during my first 3 years in colorado… many red rocks shows, many mountain adventures, and many lazy days. then, i started growing a little human inside of me and my feet began to swell and they no longer fit and one day, on a hormone fueled cleaning session, i packed up every article of clothing that i could no longer squeeze onto my body, that was growing larger everyday, and had my husband put the boxes out of eye sight. then the baby was born, the snow melted and the sun came out and my body began to slowly return to normal. i went on a search for the chacos i had once loved, but i was unable to find them. they were not in the boxes of too tight clothes and they were not in my boxes full of shoes and boots. so, refusing to go a summer without my chacos, i ordered another used pair off of ebay, but when they arrived something just wasn’t right. the arch wasn’t hitting in the right place and they felt heavy with every step i took. and then i was sad… very sad.

but things looked up when my husband came home from work and showed me what he had found in a box at our store… MY, long lost, CHACOS!!! and what do you know… they are actually a size 7! not a size 8, like the ones i had most recently ordered from ebay.

hooray for happy feet, hip hip HOORAY!!!

its true, my favorite place on earth is kirk creek campground in big sur, california along hwy 1 (pacific coast highway). i’ve talked about it often on here, so when i was in the check out aisle in the grocery store and saw the above cover i nearly dropped everything in my hands to grab it. i knew it was kirk creek, then i flipped through the magazine and found an entire article on a road trip in the airstream on the cover which ended at kirk creek.

a part of me was excited to see it, but then after getting home and devouring the article and the magazine reality set in… my secret spot, isnt so secret anymore.
